Thank you, but this training has already occurred. |
A Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model tutorial will be offered July 10–11 at the
Arctic Region Supercomputing Center on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. Space is
limited to 20 participants; registration is required and attendees will be selected on a
first-come, first-served basis. There is no cost for the tutorial.
The one- and one-half day tutorial will provide exposure to the mechanics of using WRF
on ARSC resources. The tutorial will include hands-on use of ARSC's Sun Opteron cluster,
Midnight. Attendees will gain basic proficiency with WRF, and become aware of requirements
for applying WRF to individual research purposes. No specific experience with Midnight or
WRF is required, but some familiarity with weather modeling will be assumed. Familiarity
with Unix/Linux command line utilities for file management, editing and running programs
is also suggested.
At the end of the tutorial, it is expected that attendees will have the knowledge to
prepare, execute and view a "standard" tutorial case study (Hurricane Katrina model)
in a parallel processing mode. In addition, participants will prepare a simple case study
of their own choice within the Alaska region.
Additional time will be spent creating and executing nested runs, and using a diverse set
of input data to drive model runs.
The tutorial is for those who have an interest in WRF, but little hands-on exposure. It is
open to all UA/UAF faculty, staff and students who have, or will obtain, an active ARSC
username by July 10. Registration forms are available by clicking the “Register for WRF
training” box.
All events will take place in room 009 West Ridge Research Building (WRRB) on the UAF campus; see map for location.

Don Morton (University of Montana and ARSC affiliate) is a faculty member in computer science with an interest in weather
modeling and forecasting. He has developed ARSC's daily weather runs, and is familiar with data input and output
requirements for WRF. Email:
Morton will be assisted by Martin Stuefer (UAF Geophysical Institute and ARSC affiliate), who has a background in
atmospheric sciences. Stuefer is pursuing the implementation of a smoke dispersion modeling system at ARSC that relies
in part on WRF-Chem. Email:
