International Polar Year Explorations via Virtual Globes
TUESDAY, JUNE 12
1-2 p.m. 010 West Ridge Research Building (WRRB)The first in a series of weekly seminars for the public to demonstrate how computer and information-based technologies are applied to solving real world problems will take place Tuesday, June 12 in room 010 of the West Ridge Research Building. Institute of Northern Engineering Associate Research Professor Matt Nolan will give a presentation from 1 - 2 p.m. on International Polar Year (IPY) Explorations via Virtual Globes. IPY is a two-year, multinational effort focusing on scientific research affecting Earth's polar regions. Nolan will give a second presentation on Tuesday, June 12 from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m. in WRRB 010 for UAF researchers and the public on getting IPY research highlighted in GoogleEarth.
The weekly summer science seminars are hosted by the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center. The seminars will take place every Tuesday, except July 3, at 1 p.m., June 12 - Aug. 7 in WRRB 010. Scientists and researchers who are using the highly sophisticated and exceptionally fast computational abilities at ARSC will present the weekly seminars. UAF's supercomputing center has aided in the development of 3-D computer models of tsunamis, space weather and volcanic eruptions, which have helped provide accurate and timely emergency response information to the public. Other projects focus on computer modeling of the ocean to detect shrinking polar ice caps or monitor fluctuations of fish, bird and marine mammals.
