Research Page Policy

Description

A research page is a web location, provided by ARSC, in which a user of ARSC resources can showcase his or her research. Its purpose is to reflect positively on both ARSC and the researcher.

ARSC has coined the term research page to describe a particular class of documents accessible to the world wide web. A research page is comparable to a "home page" in several ways:

  1. ARSC provides an account and disk space to the owner of the research page.
  2. ARSC maintains the http server which provides access.
  3. ARSC will provide a link to the page from ARSC root pages.
  4. The "owner" of the page assumes all responsibility for its creation and maintenance.
  5. The "owner" of the page has complete control over its contents (unless it violates the intent of research pages, at which point ARSC has the right to unlink it and deactivate the owner's account).

A research page differs from a home page as follows:

  1. A research page focuses on your research, not on you.
  2. The purpose of a research page is to showcase (or show off!) the work, projects, results, and research done on ARSC systems by the owner of the page. The purpose is not to showcase the hobbies, personality, opinions, or social concerns of the owner of the page.
  3. Any holder of an active account on ARSC's supercomputers may establish a research page. On the other hand, "Home pages" on ARSC hardware are limited to ARSC staff.

Application

If you are a user of ARSC computing resources and would like to create a web page to display your research activities at ARSC, please read our public web server page containing account information and policies for ARSC's public web server.

Guidelines

ARSC resources are being used, and therefore, research pages can affect the public's impression of ARSC as a whole. To minimize any possible repercussions while promoting creativity, and to reduce duplicity of content and purpose between the ARSC server and research pages, users are responsible for following a few guidelines in developing research pages:

  1. Place the following HREF somewhere on the user research page:

     ARSC WWW Research Page Disclaimer.

This link will add a disclaimer message to your document.

  2. Do not place material, or links to material, on your research page that is obviously offensive to people. Anything that is racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc. is forbidden.
  3. A description of your professional background, a brief "bio," a resume, and even a photo of yourself are all appropriate for your research page. However, please remember that the focus should be your research, not yourself. We encourage you to provide a URL link from your research page to your "home page" (which will not reside on an ARSC host).

This service is provided to all researchers by User Support under the provision that the above guidelines are followed. These guidelines should not inhibit creativity in the design of research pages, but they should resolve the issues of: distinguishing personal views from ARSC views; preventing potential negative impressions of ARSC; and preventing the use of ARSC-provided experience and facilities for strictly personal benefit.

More Information

ARSC Directors will be the final arbiter of cases in which these guidelines are not followed. Failure to follow the guidelines in good faith and, or to respond to requests to modify the documents to specification as stated within the guidelines may result in the loss of this privilege for the user(s) in question.
