ARSC is not a general-purpose, academic computing center. Accounts for ARSC resources are granted to eligible researchers based upon their need for High Performance Computing (HPC) resources. Users wishing to access HPC resources are required to provide proof of citizenship (and current visa, if applicable) and consent to routine background checks in lieu of a National Agency Check (NAC). In addition the Principle Investigator (PI) for the project must also provide proof of citizenship and consent to routine background checks or have a National Agency Check (NAC)- regardless of whether or not the PI will access ARSC Resources.
Users of ARSC systems are required to abide by current ARSC policies governing systems and resources operated by ARSC. These policies should be reviewed by users on a regular basis. Significant new policies, or changes to existing policies are announced through the message-of-the-day. In addition ARSC system administrators proactively search the ARSC systems for potential security risks.
Systems at ARSC use Kerberos5 with SecurID cards for user authentication. Kerberos5/SecurID enabled versions of telnet, rlogin, and FTP are provided by the Department of Defense (DoD) High Performance Computing Modernization Program (HPCMP) for a variety of platforms.
