Midnight is a Sun cluster comprised of Opteron processors. It has 2312 compute processors and a 68 TB Lustre file system

Midnight is comprised of 415 shared-memory nodes in the following configurations:

2- Sun Fire X4600 nodes which act as login nodes:
- 32 GB of shared memory per node. (4 GB per core)
- 4- dual core AMD Opteron Processors
- 1- 4X Infiniband Network Card on PCI-Express Bus per node
358- Sun Fire X2200 compute nodes with:
- 16 GB of shared memory per node (4 GB per core)
- 2- dual core 2.6 GHz AMD Opteron processors per node
- 1- 4X Infiniband Network Card on PCI-Express Bus per node
55- Sun Fire X4600 compute nodes with:
- 64 GB of shared memory per node (4 GB per core)
- 8- dual core 2.6 GHz AMD Opteron Processors per node

Description

Midnight is approprate for solving large compute and memory intensive parallel jobs. While it's possible for a single job to span both the X2200 and X4600 nodes, the vast majority of jobs will be run on one node type or the other. The X2200 and X4600 nodes all are available to jobs parallelized with MPI or a hybrid MPI/OpenMP model. Better performance for MPI jobs will generally be achieved on the X2200's. The X4600's are useful for large shared-memory challenges.

Midnight runs SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9.3 and the PBS batch system scheduler. It is attached to ARSC's mass storage system including robotic tape library.
