General Application Instructions

Thanks for your interest in ARSC's Summer Internship program! All applicants must submit information both by web and by email. The application process is entirely electronic and all communication is by email. All instructions for the written component are on this web page, and a link to the web-based form is provided. If you have questions or problems with any aspect of this application procedure, contact us, as described at the end of this page.

 

Starting your Application

Many fields in the web form are required. After you submit the form it will be returned to you with any omissions annotated. Complete the missing fields and resubmit. If some required field doesn't apply to you, just enter "NA" or "none".

Application is closed for 2008, but the on-line application form will be available again for next year's program. Thanks for your interest! Please keep us in mind for 2009.

 

Required Materials to send by email to "internsreu AT arsc.edu"

All submissions must be by email. Be sure to include a descriptive email subject, and your name, in all correspondence. For the required materials you can email a MS-Word ".doc" file, a PDF file, or a plain-text file. You will receive an email acknowledgement for all submitted items.

  1. PERSONAL STATEMENT

    Please email us an essay, not exceeding two pages, telling about yourself and why you want to participate in the ARSC Undergraduate Research Challenge. Include information such as 1) what qualifications or special abilities you possess, 2) academic and/or professional objectives, 3) why you want to participate in this internship, 4) talents, interests or circumstances that have influenced your research goals and how they relate to participation in the ARSC research internship, and 5) any specific interests in the project areas.

  2. TWO LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION FROM FACULTY

    As a candidate, you need to have two letters of recommendation from references who know you well enough to speak to your ability to perform as a scientific research intern. Obtain letters from mentors such as academic advisors or instructors. Your references can submit their recommendations themselves by email, in the file formats mentioned above. If they provide a printed letter to you, please scan it and email the scan.

  3. TRANSCRIPTS

    Submit an electronic copy of your most recent undergraduate transcript (official or unofficial). Note that we cannot access your transcripts if you simply provide links to the website at your college where your transcript reside.

Important Dates

  1. Application Deadline: (The application date for summer 2008 has passed.)

    Both the web-based and "written" components of your application must be received on or before (The application date for summer 2008 has passed.)

  2. ARSC Decision Date: Monday March 24, 2008, 5:00 pm AKDT

    Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by Monday March 24, 2008, 5:00 pm AKDT

  3. Applicant Commitment Date: Monday April 7, 2008, 5:00 pm AKDT

    Successful applicants must formally accept or decline their offer to participate on or before Monday April 7, 2008, 5:00 pm AKDT

  4. Program Dates: Monday June 9, 2008 through Friday August 15, 2008

    Travel to Alaska will be the weekend just prior to the start of the program, so all interns will be on-site at 9:00am, Monday June 9, 2008 .
