About the University of Alaska Fairbanks The University of Alaska Fairbanks was created in 1915 by the U.S. Congress and was originally called the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines when the Territorial Legislature accepted the land grant in 1917. UAF is a comprehensive land, sea and space grant university which serves over 160 communities statewide through distance delivery of instruction, public service and research activities.
