Greg Newby is ARSC's Chief Scientist. He is appointed as a research faculty member at UAF, and part of the ARSC executive team. Dr. Newby has been active with the ARSC internship program since 2003, as a mentor and as the program manager. Newby has broad research interests, including information systems, information retrieval, information visualization, community information systems, grid computing and electronic texts.

He is deeply engaged in computational science activities, including studies and analysis of new technologies for high performance computing. Some recent study areas include field programmable gate arrays, graphics processing units, high-level languages for reconfigurable computing, and multi-core processors. As Editor for the Open Grid Forum, Newby is part of the community of scientists working to create open standards for grid computing. He works with researchers modeling a variety of arctic-focused phenomena, including weather, smoke/fire, hydrology, human infrastructure, ecology, and human cognition. He is also a security expert, with interests in anti-circumvention technologies and information policy.

Dr. Newby's prior work as a professor at the University of Illinois and the University of North Carolina focused on educating information professionals about information technology. He taught one of the first courses dealing with the Internet (starting in 1988), and developed courses in information security, systems administration, and other high-tech topics. He designed and oversaw new degree programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, and has been active in distance education.

He lives in the Two Rivers area of Fairbanks, with his wife and several dozen sled dogs. The dogs provide a welcome opportunity to spend time on the Alaska winter trail systems, in the great outdoors.
