Texas/Alaska summer intern program draws to a close
Fairbanks, Alaska - Today marks the culmination of this year's
chapter in a new partnership between universities in Texas and Alaska
to provide summer internship opportunities for engineering and science
students. Six students from the University of Texas at El Paso, who
spent the summer working on projects at the University of Alaska
Fairbanks, will make presentations about their work today from 1-4 p.m.
in 109 Butrovich Building on the UAF campus.
The partnership, formed between the Pan American Center for Earth and Environmental
Studies (PACES) at UTEP and the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center
(ARSC) at UAF, is a new initiative this year. The program offered students
the chance to work with UAF professors on research projects as varied
as designing rocket elements for the Poker Flat Research Range to performing
lab experiments with data storage on magnetic media.
Scott A. Starks, PACES director, and Michelle Smith, PACES program coordinator,
are in Fairbanks to review the student's progress with Frank Williams,
ARSC director and Betty Studebaker, ARSC program coordinator. They and
