ARSC Storage Policies
Data Availability
ARSC attempts to ensure the availability and integrity of user data including programs, data sets, etc. This is accomplished via regular on-site backups of home directories and the
$ARCHIVE_HOME
filesystem. ARSC maintains off-site backups only for HPCMP user data. Users assume all responsibility for the loss of data stored on ARSC computer systems. Users with special concerns should contact
User Support
.
Data Backups
Backups are done for:
-
All
$ARCHIVE_HOMEdirectories -
All
$HOMEdirectories -
No
$WORKDIRor$SCRATCHdirectories on any system
We recommend saving copies of all important data to your
$ARCHIVE_HOME
directory.
A full backup of all archive filesystems is performed nightly. These backups are kept for 30 days.
Data Restoration
If data is lost on a backed up filesystem, the filesystem will be restored using the most recent backup available. Changes made to files since the most recent backup will be lost.
Restoration from accidental deletion, corruption, etc. is available for backed up filesystems. Contact User Support as soon as possible for assistance. There are no guarantees that lost or corrupted files can be restored.
Data Retention
Inactive accounts and the data associated with them may be deleted from ARSC systems. In general this will not occur unless a user or their project has not reregistered. Several warnings will be given before the account and associated data is deleted.
Users who wish to maintain data in inactive accounts must make special arrangements with User Support .
Data may be transferred from an inactive account per request of the owner of the account or the Primary Investigator of the project. Please contact User Support for more information.
Data Content
ARSC provides storage for data sets with scientific, educational or cultural value. Sensitive information- such as server backups, or personally identifiable information- such as social security numbers, birthdays, addresses, names, etc., should not be stored on ARSC storage servers or HPC resources. Copyrighted materials are prohibited without proper authorization, e.g. illegal copies of music, movies, books, software, etc. Illegal content is prohibited.
