Vis5D Class at ARSC

ARSC will run a training class on the use of the Vis5D package, on Wednesday, September 23, 1-4pm in room 007 of the Butrovich Building.

Vis5D is an interactive, general purpose software package for visualizing time varying, multidimensional data; it can be used on PCs, workstations or the ImmersaDesk. The class will cover (1) preparation of data sets, (2) the Vis5D user interface, and (3) strategies for using the package effectively.

The class is free, and open to any interested faculty, staff or students. Please register before Tuesday, September 22 by phoning 450-8602 or by sending e-mail to .

Programming Environment Upgraded at ARSC

The default PE on yukon has been upgraded to include:


In case you would like to make more comparison tests, the previous environment is still available. Load it with the command:

module switch PrgEnv PrgEnv.old

(Note: the chilkoot PE has been similarly upgraded.)

High-Performance Fortran Compiler, pghpf, Upgraded at ARSC

Version 2.4.4 of the Portland Group's High Performance Fortran was made the default pghpf compiler during system downtime on 15 Sept 1998. As always, you may access the default version with the command:

module load pghpf

The previous version is still installed, and may be accessed with the command:

module load pghpf.2.3

or, if you have already loaded the default, with the command:

module switch pghpf pghpf.2.3

Documentation for pghpf 2.4 is available from ARSC's online document server at the address:

The following features have been added to PGHPF 2.4 since the prior 2.2 and 2.3 (CRAY T3E only) releases.

  • Support for HPF 2.0 semantics has been added under control of the -Mhpf2 command-line switch. This switch will become the default in a future release of PGHPF.
  • Support for the HPF 2.0 SHADOW directive.
  • Support for the HPF2.0 additional arguments to HPF_DISTRIBUTION(), and GLOBAL_DISTRIBUTION().
  • Fortran 90 POINTER mappings must conform to the TARGET mapping, as specified in HPF 2.0.
  • The REDUCTION clause is now supported on INDEPENDENT loops.
  • Internal procedures are now supported on systems using a Fortran 90 compiler as the native Fortran back-end (currently only CRAY platforms).
  • Recursion is now supported on systems using either a Fortran 90 compiler as the native Fortran back-end or a PGI-supplied native Fortran back-end (currently only CRAY, SPARC, and IA-32 platforms).
  • The graphical user interface (GUI) for PGPROF has been updated.
  • A new compiler switch, -Mbyteswapio, will cause bytes to be swapped from big-endian to little-endian format (or vice versa) on input/output of unformatted Fortran binary files. This allows IA-32 systems, for example, to read/write binary files produced on a big-endian IEEE format system (for example SGI or Sun).
  • The -Mf90 switch has been modified to interpret programs using Fortran 90 semantics.
  • The -Mserial switch has been modified to cause programs to compile in serial mode but using HPF semantics.
  • The -Mcraft switch is supported on the CRAY T3E to allow compilation of HPF_CRAFT programs and/or extrinsics. See the HPF_CRAFT User's Guide for more information on how to use this switch.
  • New switches, -Mtotalview and -Mtv, have been added to support compilation for debugging with TotalView.
  • Support has been added for PALLAS VAMPIR, a communications and performance profiling tool, using the -Mvampir switch.
  • A new runtime switch --pghpf -system_clock_rate allows the user to set the granularity of the clock used in the F90 SYSTEM_CLOCK intrinsic. By default, the granularity is 1000 ticks per second on all platforms other than Cray, which has a 64-bit timer. Most platforms support higher resolution, but implement the timer in only 32 bits. For example, a value of --pghpf -system_clock_rate 1000000 could be used to increase granularity to 1,000,000 ticks per second, but the clock would roll over after approximately 30 minutes on a system with 32-bit timer. A corresponding environment variable PGHPF_SYSTEM_CLOCK_RATE can be set to increase the granularity for all runs. This option is available to allow users to perform high resolution timings without sacrificing the occasional need to time computations that take hours or even days.

Most of these features are described in more detail either in the following sections or in the PGHPF Compiler User's Guide, which has been updated for release 2.4.
