Thursday, January 18, 2007 8:30 – 5:00 pm West Ridge Research Building Room 010 University of Alaska Fairbanks Fairbanks, AlaskaThese days metadata are a requirement for sound science and for receiving federal and other funding. They are part of being a good citizen and represent a global set of “Best Professional Practices;” they are manifested already as binding ISO standards. However, the tools, software, expertise, infrastructure and awareness to achieve good metadata are often missing. This free workshop promotes metadata creation across various disciplines (terrestrial, marine, arctic, boreal, tropical, ecology, sensors, remote sensing, GIS, biodiversity, statistical models) so that students, faculty, agency employees, contractors and other interested parties understand the required steps, the whys and the hows to assemble metadata according to FGDC, NBII and IPY standards. We will cover links with GBIF, OBIS, ITIS (Canada and U.S.), and the requirements brought by NSF and ISO. Metadata creation tools, such as Metavist, TKME, NPS tool, ArcGIS/Catalogue and SMMS and metadata formats, for example, XML and EML, will be covered. The workshop will include presentations, hands-on sessions, shared experiences, and discussions with the participants and experts in the field. The goal of this workshop is to cover the standards and tools that will enable the audience to create their own high-quality metadata. Participants are encouraged to bring their own data to the workshop so that they can learn to use the tools with familiar data. The cost of the workshop is free, but please register by sending email to: Rebecca Koskela ( koskela@arsc.edu ). Questions about this workshop can be sent to Falk Huettmann ( fffh@uaf.edu ) or Rebecca Koskela. Hosted by: Laboratory for Ecological Wildlife Habitat Data Analysis for the Land and Seascape (EWHALE) Arctic Region Supercomputing Center (ARSC) Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB)
